Essential items:
- Write your CV in the first person (i.e. I have), rather
than the third person (i.e. he/she has).
- Your CV must be easy to read, the typeface should be 11 or 12 point.
- Include a covering letter with your CV. This should include a brief
overview of yourself to the employer. It needs to explain why you
are interested in the job and what skills you have to offer. Most
cover letters consist of just three or four paragraphs. Avoid letters
that exceed one page. The closing paragraph should indicate your contact
address and telephone number and e-mail if available.
- Address your covering letter to a named individual if possible.
- Read and re-read the job advert.
- Ensure that you can fulfill all the essential criteria that the
employer is seeking.
Handy hints:
- Try to keep your CV to two pages. Three pages maximum.
- Include relevant work experience, not a paper round you did 30 years
ago.
- Make sure your CV looks clear and tidy. No spelling mistakes or
typos!
- Simple is best! Although it is tempting to make your CV stand out
by using, for example, coloured paper or an arty layout, it is best
to stick to black print on good quality white paper.
Optional extras:
Get a second opinion from someone you trust. Include examples
of your work, if appropriate. Mention your honours and awards. If you've
received any accolades or played a part in achieving any company achievements,
mention these because recognition by your peers is meaningful and impressive.
